Solar Power and the Home

Solar power is quickly becoming one of the leading sources of energy, mostly because it uses the natural power of the sun to harness energy instead of using harmful matter like nuclear power or burning coal, oil or gas.

There are multiple uses of solar power in a home.  Solar panels act as a power source for energy usage in the home, supplying power to lighting, electronics, appliances, and heating and cooling systems.   A solar powered system is virtually self-contained within the home and can actually be used to give back energy to the main power grid, helping to supply power to everyone in the community.

Solar Powered Attic Fans

A roof-mounted solar attic fan transforms sunlight into electric power to drive a motor that spins a fan blade and removes heat and moisture from the attic.

Many manufacturers now offer solar powered attic fans to ventilate attics and help keep attics cooler. Solar powered fans rely on a small (typically 10- or 20-watt) solar panel to power a DC motor when the sun is shining. The fans, which exhaust air at a rate of 800 to 1200 cfm, are installed with intake vents (such as soffit and gable vents) to provide high-capacity powered ventilation without electric operating costs. Most vents are mounted high on the roof, near the ridge, and combined with soffit or gable vents for balanced intake and exhaust air streams. Solar powered gable ventilators are also available.
